2002
Most of the original members played for Prince Andrew High School who wanted to continue playing after graduating. The choices were to travel to Halifax, play for arch rivals in Cole Harbour, or form a new club. With the help of a few players from Dartmouth High and Auburn High, the team came together. We played exhibition matches against anyone who would play us. We traveled to Amherst to play our first test and won a one sided match against another club just starting up. Our tradition of tenting on road trips began on this trip. Because we played in new "Hot Shot" jerseys from Barbarian, which no two were alike, we called ourselves the Chameleons. Molson became our main sponsor and the Old Mill tavern became our home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2003 We began barn training over the winter months in Mount Uniacke. It was bitterly cold and dusty but no one complained. The club attended their first Truro 7's and did well. We started our season off by traveling to Saint John, New Brunswick to play two games against local clubs. The Saint John Canadians hosted us on our first road trip and a great relationship between the two clubs was formed. We then set forth on our quest with our first year in the Nova Scotia Senior Rugby Union. We failed to win any games, but the boys stuck together and had many good times. The club entered their first Seahorse Cup in August. We began the year off by traveling to Saint John for our annual "Road Trip" with the Canadians. We won our first match as an official club. We took the momentum back home and won our first league match against the Truro Saints on our home pitch in Eastern Passage. We managed to win three more games and made the playoffs. We lost in the semi finals to the Tars in overtime. The club was quickly recognized as a very good social club and immediate improvement, through hard work and commitment, gave us respect as an up and coming team to be reckoned with. Off to a great start by winning the consolation round at the Truro 7's. Once again, we began the season off in Saint John and bonded with a great road trip. The PigDogs had their best results in the summer league and making it to the finals, only to lose to the Valley Bulldogs. The PigDogs welcomed the ladies side to the family as the club almost doubled in size. The "LPD" played with good spirit and managed to win a game against the Valley Tide in their first season. We started a tradition called the "PigDog Roast" where we (all in good fun) select a long-standing member of the local rugby community and roast him or her for their contributions to the game. Marty Williams was the first recipient and inducted as an honouree PigDog. A good turn out and many laughs made for a great time. Club Awards: PigDog of the Year - Chris Kingwell Most Valuable Players Men's - Ian Duey Ladies - Barb MacDonald Most Improved Players Men's - Sean O'Brien Ladies - Michelle Pineau Rookie of the Year Men's - Corey Haley ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2006
The PigDogs made their first international road trip to Belfast, Ireland in March. We traveled the rocky road to Dublin to watch Ireland defeat Scotland during a Six Nations match at Lansdowne Road. We played three games. Losing to Ards RFC. in a down pour, defeating Grosvenor RFC. under the lights and losing the rubber match to our host club, Belfast Y.M.C.A. RFC. with a St. Patty's hangover. The Molson Cup was created to be challenged by Dartmouth and Saint John on an annual basis and won by the PigDogs. It is vied for in early June at Saint John and once again in late June, back home in Dartmouth. The men's season started out with a great bang but fizzled a bit at mid term. The boys got things together and put on a late charge, playing some of their best rugby. The PigDogs made it to the finals once again, only to lose to Truro. The ladies side upset many unsuspecting teams and ending with a 6-1 record in season play. Proving it was not a fluke, they played a very good playoff run and made it to the finals in only their second season. They played a very close and hard fought final match but ended up second to the Tars. A coming out year for the ladies side and many individual players stepped up and played their best rugby yet. The PigDogs started the year off under new management. After running the club as president from day one, Rick Kitchin stepped down and Chris Kingwell was elected as the clubs second leader. Chris takes over a great club that has tripled in size over the past three years. The lady PigDogs did well at the Truro 7's, losing to Saint Mary's University in the quarter finals. The men's side made it to the semi finals before bowing out to the University of Toronto. The club settled in with Dave Doolittle's for their new home. The PigDogs hosted a great touring side from Mount Royal in May. The men's side defeated the team from Quebec and the ladies side came second. But the third half back at Dave Doolittle's was a draw. The men's side won the Molson Rugby Cup once again and the ladies side dominated their trip to Saint John. The men's side had their first import player. Allen "Bloxy" Bloxham, from Northern Ireland helped the boys complete the clubs first undefeated season with a 6-0 record. Unfortunately, they lost out in the first round of playoffs. The ladies had a great season of 5-1 and also lost out in the first round of the playoffs in over-time to the Tars. The men's side struggled through a frustrating fall schedule finishing a strong third place, but fell in the first round of playoffs to Truro after not playing for a month. The Lady PigDogs (LPD) took their first road trip to Orlando Florida in May. They stayed in Walt Disney World for eight days and played the University of Central Florida and Orlando RFC. The PigDogs continued their tradition of playing in Saint John for preseason games. The men won the Molson Cup against Woodstock and the Ladies won the Coor's Lite Cup against Saint John. The Ladies team went undefeated (5-0) and won their the semi-finals against a much improved Truro team. They lost to a strong Halifax RFC side in a down pour for the Provincial Title. The men's team went 6-1in the summer season, only loosing to Halifax RFC. They defeated River lake in the conference semi-final and beat Halifax in the finals. They lost the Title match to PEI in a very close match. The men's team went 5 - 1 in the fall season and lost in the conference finals to a very talented Halifax squad. This year's banquet was once again held at Dave Doolittle's and attended by a very large and festive crowd. The awards were handed out a PigDog celebration begun. Along with the Tars, Windsor and some Rugby NS officials, fifty kids were introduced to rugby and witnessed two great games. The following day, along with the Tars, Valley Bulldogs and Enfield RFC, the PigDogs travelled to Digby to play two games for two high schools. June saw the PigDogs make their annual pilgrimage to New Brunswick, but this time it was Moncton and we were hosted by the Black Tide. Two great games with the girls winning both and the men's side spitting their games. This year marked to opening of our new field in Burnside. The ladies side had a great season finishing in 3rd place and bowing out in the semi-finals in a very closely contested match against the Tars1. The men's side started off slowly, but pulled themselves together in time to make a run of seven wins to finish the regular season schedule. They went into the playoffs ranked in 3rd place and won all games to win their first Nova Scotia Div2 title. They travelled to Belleisle NB to win their first Maritime Championship.
